IER’s Thomas Pyle on Armendariz Resignation from EPA

WASHINGTON D.C. — IER President Thomas Pyle released the following statement regarding the resignation of EPA Region 6 Administrator Al Armendariz, who was under heavy criticism because of a stated “crucifixion” enforcement strategy that was caught on tape and distributed last week by Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.):

“Administrator Al Armendariz’s comments are representative of the arbitrary and punitive enforcement strategy that has developed at the EPA in the last three years. His resignation, while appropriate, does nothing to stop the regulatory assault on traditional energy producers currently led by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson. A pattern of politicized rule-making and reckless scientific analysis envelop the agency, despite the damage-control efforts being coordinated at the White House.

“Words are important, but actions speak louder than words. And while Administrator Armendariz’s comments were reprehensible, the agency’s ongoing effort to intimidate and even bankrupt coal, oil and natural gas producers is far worse.”

Is this witchhunt by the republicans — trying to make examples of Ms Jackson and other EPA people in light of this terrible remark by one administrator — is this witch hunt any different than what they accuse the EPA of doing —- making punitive examples to make the rest fall in line? And while on this subject how come there is no media covering how EPA/DOJ prior to the Obama administration allowed one of the largest polluters to ‘set an example’ and escape 100% liability for criminal illegal disposal of wastes? Who waited two years to bring the region 6 admin’s words to light right now at a critical point of time instead of earlier and why are the “old guard ” staff (starfield and coleman) being given more authority when they both were there during that prior administration and they did nothing. ..
