The energy moratorium in the Gulf is killing jobs and sending energy production overseas. The Gulf is struggling enough already without this politically-based job killing moratorium.

The Oil Spill Commission heard testimony last week from a large number of anti-energy activists. We can’t let our energy policy be dictated by anti-energy special interest groups.

The drilling moratorium in the Gulf is unnecessary and it is killing thousands of jobs. According to Department of Interior documents, the moratorium could cost 23,000 people their jobs. We need to understand the root causes of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, but the moratorium isn’t helping come to a better understanding of the disaster. It is just creating a new jobs disaster. Don’t the people of the Gulf coast deserve better? 
 
America is an energy rich nation. But this Administration believes we are energy poor and they are trying a number of avenues to actually reduce our energy production. The moratorium is just one example. It should be immediately reversed to allow Americans to go back to work.
 
The federal government only leases 3 percent of its land for energy production. The Gulf is one of the few areas leased. The lack of production is harm economic growth. According to the Louisana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association, almost 80 percent of the oil produced in the Gulf comes from deepwater areas. They estimate that the costs of the exploration moratorium range from between $8 to $16 million per day in rig costs, $1 million a day for support boats and between $165 and $330 million a month in lost wages from the deepwater rigs.
 
The deepwater moratorium has caused a moratorium in shallow waters as well since the Administration has hardly issued any of the necessary permits to drill. If the Administration stays it course, by the end of September, 63 percent of shallow water rigs will be idled.
 
We need to understand what went wrong on the Deepwater Horizon, but the drilling moratorium isn’t help achieve that goal. Instead it is just killing jobs in an already hard-hit area.
